Online Poker Tournaments
Online poker games continue to increase in popularity. Because people have become so familiar with online poker, there has also been a significant increase in online poker tournament play.
Online poker tournaments are now offered on almost every major online poker site. Tournaments are so prevalent that poker players of any skill level can participate seven days a week, twenty-four hours a day.
Participants in online poker tournaments range from poker newbies to seasoned players. If you want to play to win, you need to be on top of your game. Some players use online poker tournaments to make a living. Let your guard down and they’ll take your chips and your chances of winning
Rules and Regulations
The rules and regulations of online poker tournaments vary depending upon the site and the game that is being played. You should always familiarize yourself with the tournament rules before signing up. Most online sites will provide this information, along with a list of prizes, before the tournament starts. Increase your chance of winning by checking everything out and making sure that you’re prepared.
Though must rules vary depending upon the tournament and the site, there are general online poker rules that are almost universal:
Chips.
Usually every player begins the game with the same amount of chips. There are a few exceptions. For example, re-buy or buy-in tournaments (see more below) allow players to buy additional chips later in the tournament. Having extra chips can mean the difference between winning and losing, so make sure you have a clear understanding of chip allotment before beginning a tournament.
Dealing In and Cashing Out.
One of the main differences between online poker games and online poker tournaments is timing. When you play casino-style poker games you can be dealt in halfway through the game and you can cash out and take your chips with you whenever you want. Online poker tournaments are different. Players typically start at the same time and play continues until a winner has been established. Again, there are exceptions. Some tournaments do allow players to just drop in at any time.
Bidding.
Many online poker sites require the bid level to increase throughout the tournament. The levels may change based on time frames, play periods, or other deciding factors that have been set by the site’s administrator.
Prizes
Prizes always vary depending upon the tournament. Some online poker tournaments offer cash prizes, while others have prizes like player points.
Another common prize is entry into another tournament. Many of the recent winners of the World Series of Poker achieved their spot at the table by winning online poker tournaments. Though cash prizes are nice, free entry into another tournament can be a major prize in itself.
Prizes are typically awarded after the winner or winners have been announced. Online poker tournaments often have first, second, and third place winners. Usually the largest part of the prize pool (50% or more) goes to top winner of the tournament, while the second and third place winners receive whatever is left.
It is up to the tournament sponsor to establish and announce the prizes prior to the tournament’s start. Before you sign up for a tournament, know what you’re playing for. If you are a serious player or if you are trying to make a living from online poker, you may be able to find greener pastures elsewhere.
